Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the right to contest specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
