The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
