RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
